A Poem About Highways

I think I should’ve stopped writing a little earlier, but I didn’t and instead came up with this bit of “poetic” writing.

I think that in terms of imagery this might provide something, but otherwise its value as a poem is rather low.

I hope you enjoy.

Thin roads carry distances from which an end cannot be seen
Traveled along they are, looking for something along their body
There are many places to turn off, but none provide an exit
Only a detour and a distraction during a break

The roads are followed over small spans of time
Though said spans seem lengthy when experienced
Seldom do they seem as such before or after their existence
And so they are defined mostly by relation

The scenery changes through variations of the landscape
It is dominated by hills more than it is open plains
Vegetation reigns supreme over anything else
And geology remains mostly uniform

The thin roads continue through the vast expanse
Full of nothingness and everything
They stretch beyond any suggested end
They their body is followed by those looking for something

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1023: Rushed Through

There was only so much time and there was a rush to try and squeeze that little bit more of time within time to get the most out of the time that was remaining.

They didn’t feel as though they had enough, but no one ever does really. It wasn’t as though things were completely urgent, or like there was any urgency at all. They were only putting pressure on themselves and as such were causing undue amounts of stress. Still, it helped keep them motivated and as such they refused to back down and relax in any way, shape or form.

As such, it was difficult to discern as to what the hurry was for, for there still was quite a bit of stretch of day ahead. Perhaps they just wanted to get that little bit more work in before they had to head off to wherever they had to head off. Sure, they could deal with this later and whilst they were out, but that would be folly and they wanted to have less to do later rather than more. They knew they’d probably slow down later, but not nearly enough to cause any concern.

Through documents and files they rushed through, adding extra touches and making sweeping edits in their attempts to make sure that all was together and all was as complete as possible. They were trying to get more time out of time and it was mostly a fool’s errand, for all of the work that they did in this small pocket they had, they were doing a poor job.

Well, perhaps that is a little dramatic to say, but there was no denying that their work was suffering. They weren’t giving enough attention to whatever it was that they were doing and so all the changes and additions they were making, whilst adding, were not necessarily improving as much as required.

Soon they ran out and had to stop. They saved their work, compiled everything into one spot and left. They had to hurry. There was little time before they would need to catch their bus and if they missed that, then the whole day may have been thrown out.

Out the door, up the hill and along a street they rushed. Toward their preferred bus stop they moved and there they arrived, with more than enough time, for during their waiting for their bus they learned that it had been delayed by quite a bit and so they needed a backup plan. However, there was no backup plan.

They rushed to the nearest main road and there they caught a different bus. They were going to be on time, but only just, so long as traffic did not become an issue, which thankfully it did not.

When they arrived to where they wanted to be, they were prepared for what would come. Sure, they were rushed, but they kept their cool.

Unfortunately they left the files behind, and they didn’t have any backups.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:29:87

I feel as though this could’ve been better had I not tried to rush this whilst feeling rather tired.

I also feel that the word limit hurt this a fair bit. I kind of had to squeeze the ending in and it feels awkward.

One Thousand Word Challenge 150: Grey, Grey Day

It was a grey, grey day.

The sky was dull and its subdued light made for a match of the rigid structures and colourless layout of the city. Rain was heavy and the streets were quiet. They preferred days such as these, though unfortunately they could not take it all in for there was a walk to attend to and perhaps there would be the need to deal with business. It was a work day but it was not a fun work day, though work was seldom, if ever, fun.

They still were able to conduct their walk and remain relatively dry. They were prepared; they’d done this many a time and new that it’d be better to stay dry, for the inconvenience of dealing with wet clothes in a business setting was not one that made for a comfortable experience.

For now the streets were theirs. There were a few people moving about here and there, and some staying under awnings, hoping the rain would end before they reached a point where they felt it better to try and run through to wherever they needed to go. Unfortunately for them they would end up running, for the rain was not going to let up on this particular day.

The rain itself remained heavy, beating and striking upon solid surfaces, filling gutters with small, quick-moving streams. Few places it would pool up, creating another obstacle to navigate, and the city seemed to be caught in a faded glow in spots. Sometimes the brightness in the sky seemed so much more than it actually was, but perhaps that was due to the surfaces of the city becoming much more reflective than usual.

Traffic too was low and this was much appreciated, for the streets were emptier. Still, not as empty as desired, but empty enough at the least. Traffic was trying to get out of the city and into the suburban surrounds, and it may have been seen as a noble endeavour had the traffic not seemed so in a rush. A slow rush, but a rush nonetheless.

They walked through the main drags of the city and listened to the sound of the rain, almost deafening yet somehow quiet. They eventually turned away and went down an alley, then down an incline. They were looking for water, even though they were surrounded by it.

There was a desire to try and look out over the harbour from some sort of vantage point and let the drama and the quiet of the scene overcome them, or at least get something close to that. They didn’t have to worry about work at this particular moment, though they eventually would; this was their time and they were trying to expend it in the way they felt was best for them. It was a good thing that they knew the way and so they were able to move a little faster, though still seemingly in a relaxed manner. Their walk was quick, yet it lacked all the rigidity an accelerated pace usually carries.

They continued on and followed the footpath into a small, dry space, though only partially, for the space was only partially sealed. At the end an escalator and they were back on a wider ground, still surrounded by tall buildings, though slightly less imposing than the clustering closer to the main roads. Cafés were open and few people were in them, for few wanted to walk through the rain to get consumables. Some people were standing outside, smoking, waiting for their takeaway coffee before they would hurry off to wherever they felt they needed to be, but otherwise few people were outside. It seemed to be getting quieter and so space was less of a premium, though definitely not something to be taken for granted.

Once they were out of the cluster of buildings and facing the water they changed direction. Following the outside edge of the building clusters they headed toward nearby parkland, hoping that that too would be mostly, if not completely empty. The parkland had little coverage that was useful for people and so this hope was not one that was a desperate one; it was backed by confidence and understanding in how the area was approached in this kind of weather, for they had been there plenty of times in the rain and they had seen few people around.

It was an area that seemed detached from the city, yet wholly a part. After a while it became readily apparent as to how it was just an extension of the city and its grasp and not a pocket cut off from corporate hands. Still, even if illusory, it offered a suggestion of a break and that was a nice kind of illusion to have. It made it easier to forget about the extended region.

They reached this small pocket and found their spot past sandstone and at a curve. They were able to look out and remain mostly dry, even as the rain fell with weight into the harbour and onto the parkland. The waves seemed numerous and almost overwhelming in their number, and yet the harbour seemed possessed by still noise. The easiest description of the scene was picturesque. Even though it was grey and dull and wet and what some would consider miserable, it still had a quality to it that made it appealing, but only at certain times and only when in certain moods.

Toward and through this they started, trying to absorb it all, but once more they found themselves lost in thought, letting the rainfall move their thoughts inward as they thought about the various things they’d experienced in their time, though their time had yet to be anything other than short, for there were many long years ahead of them. Still, they could not help but think about what had been achieved and what hadn’t, and so, in staring out, all they could do at that time was think about themselves.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1022: I tried to go for something more energised but I relaxed more the longer this writing continued

And so now I’m awake, but I’ve been awake for a little bit of time now. It feels almost like a jolt; a jolt of sleepiness of which is something that I now need to deal with, but instead of that I’m going to think of other things.

I’m going to think of the ants and think of the things that aren’t ants. That might be a few too many things, but I’m going to do it and there are none who can stop me, other than the ones who can stop me. I should probably avoid them.

Now you see, I’m already putting far too much effort into whatever this is and so I need to tone it down a bit. I need to make this less exciting. Less exciting and more boring is where the things need to lie and so long as I strike that balance of excitement and boringness, I think I can succeed in the way that I need to succeed.

Does there even need to be any success? Probably not. However, that is not as to what I am considering at the moment. This is more about what I can get done than what I cannot get done.

I can get this bit of writing done and then from there I can spread off into other things. I can get through the woods and through the air to find the valleys and gullies that I hope to find, and then I can go to the desert and look at all the vegetation there.

Might be a bit of walking involved.

Still, that could be a good thing. Walking is good for the legs and good for the health. It’s good for a few things really, but it also helps with seeing the sights and hearing the sounds. You get to experience the smells of nature and you use your eyes as you traverse in the forward direction.

Sometimes as you engage in this activity, you may turn your head to the side to look at other things that are not in front of you, and of course in doing this you need to have some level of confidence in your ability to trust what is in front of you, or something like that. You don’t want to look to the side for too long, however, as you want to make sure that there are no obstacles along your path that could lead to serious injury, or even any form of injury for that matter.

Still, it would all be pleasant. It would be long and perhaps arduous, but it would be pleasant. There would be so much to absorb and in that absorbing of stuff stuff would be experienced and maybe you’d do sketches or something else that has some sort of artistic inclination. The possibilities are endless, though they also are limited.

Still, just getting away from the city would be pleasant enough without any goals in mind; Being out there, experiencing things.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:22:39

Speedy, kind of bland.
Not sure as to what happened but I just started powering down, so to speak. I think that comes through in the writing.

One Thousand Word Challenge 149: Trying to Think

So I’m sitting here and I’m trying to think of something else that I can write about. I’m trying to think of anything and I guess that what I could do is write about my day. However, in sitting here in silence I’m realising that I’m just really tired right now and perhaps I should think about other things, such as going to sleep.

I could try and make this a lengthy and garbled mess, but really what I really want right now is sleep, or at least to lie in bed for a good while. I need to rest. It is time to rest and that is what I need to do.

I’ve done a fair bit of driving and now I’m going on a pointless complaining that will ultimately lead to nowhere, such as it is, and so therefore I should think about other things now. I should think about writing about other things. I don’t want to write about being tired; I’ve done that more than enough times and I don’t think it is warranted anymore. Well, maybe it will be at some stage in the future, but right now I don’t feel as though it is warranted. What I do feel, however, is that there are other things that I could write about that have a greater justification to their existence.

I was going to try and get two more bits of crappy fiction written down, but I really don’t think I have it in me right now. I think I can mash out a good amount of words on something that matters even less, but that’s a real “let us see what happens” type of thing that I also don’t feel much like entertaining. Maybe it really is time for me to rest. Maybe I should stop doing this right now and just get into bed and then let the art of sleep take over so that I can wake up in the morning feeling refreshed, or at least feeling as though there is an idea of feeling refreshed and so on and so forth. That would leave me feeling better and I’d much rather feel better than worse. I imagine most people would rather feel better than worst though, so that isn’t really saying very much at this present time in the present.

What can I currently say that would say a lot in the present? I’m very good at using a lot of words to say very little, but maybe I should start looking at turning that around. Maybe I should start looking at using less words to try and say vaguely profound things that help express my ability to be profound and wise and all of those other things. Maybe I could look to do that. That seems like a fruitful endeavour, but the thing is that I’ve run out of words to use and therefore there isn’t much I can really say.

Maybe I could say a lot without saying anything at all. I should attempt to do that maybe. Maybe that can lead to providing things that are profound and then in providing that kind of profound stuff I’ll achieve something that I didn’t think was possible for me to achieve.

Whatever that thing would be, I’ve no idea and maybe that scares me a bit, so maybe I should hold off and think of doing something else entirely. Maybe I should just look at saying things not with words, but with something that I can;t think of right now.

Maybe I really should rest and pack this away and then call it an evening even though it is a night and it is dark outside and it is light in here due to the po9wer of a light that is being used at the present moment.

Maybe I should just sleep.

There are things that I could be doing and I will do them soon but instead of doing them now I am doing this and in doing this I postpone the inevitable; something of which I need to stop doing. However, I will get to all of that soon as I need to think of something that I can do to make this worth the time and effort that is being put in even though it will be ended soon.

How soon? I don’t know.

Anyway, there surely is something. I could talk about the mouse that is next to the keyboard and I could talk about how it is not currently being used. I could do that. That might lead to something. I’m not sure if it will, but it might. There’s a thought.

Then again, any thought that I could be diving to that right now I could instead be giving to this and in giving that thought to this the work grows and spreads and becomes something better than what it currently is. Then again, maybe it’ll be worse and it’ll get tangled up all over itself and then what will I do? Where will I go? Who could I drag over here and get to look upon this thing and ask them as tow here I went wrong? Oh, how I would despair!

So what I’m really saying is that I’ve got nothing to say right now and perhaps that is the better thing. Perhaps it is a sign and signs are often telling of things. Good to pay attention to signs and all of that other stuff. Need to make sure to do so so as to be better informed when there are signs about.

Then again, what does any of that matter if all I’m going to do is keep on prattling on about things that don’t even matter in any way, shape or form?

So I guess what it is that I’m really saying is that I’ve no idea as to what it is that I’m saying, though truthfully there might be some idea, but then again, It’s likely there’s none.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 11:03:33

Fast and came easy. I think I stopped a few times to think about what I was writing, but still this just all came out.

Bit of a mess. Perhaps there are things in here that capture a sense of something.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1021: A Fine Day

It was a fine day and in that fine day there were plenty of things to do.

It stretched out in a lengthy and pleasing manner, much like the hills that lay outward along the road of which the road had to traverse, as well as the vehicles that had to traverse the land along the road.

Things happened. There were photos. There was walking. There was even talking. There were other things as well but that is not something that right now we’re going to get into as the focus is on the day at hand.

It started in darkness and then the sun rose, bathing the land around in its light, causing shadows to retreat to where they could experience as little of the sun’s light as possible. Quiet sounds became louder, though not cacophonous. The world was greeted in a manner most pleasing and it was through all of that happening that a set of people in a group of two set out on a journey to go somewhere and find something that they could call their own, if even only for a few minutes.

Their journey was one that was a straightforward as it was complex, for over-planning was something that got the better of them, and for no reason whatsoever really. It was just a drive for a few hours to somewhere where few people would normally go, and that’s all it had to be. Instead of doing so, the smallest of things were accounted for and all that accounting had no bearing on the journey other than the potential to inflate the amount of time spent preparing for things that would not happen. Still, when all was said and done, it was better to be prepared than not and so in the quiet hours during low traffic the journey commenced and continued into the daylight hours whilst traffic was picking up in the city.

Breaking away from the city early was the best thing as there was little traffic around now that they were away from it, and so they could continue their search with little, if any, difficulty, and really, that was the best way to go about things.

Soon they would see waves and at the waves there would be sand. There would be cliffs slowly eroded away and there would be the sounds of the ocean and perhaps seafaring birds. There would be many things, but that would not be where they would find what it was that they were looking for.

Perhaps there was no finding what it was that they were looking for, but there was always hope. There were always other days in which they could reattempt searching, but hopefully with less planning. However, they would still try. They would still leave the city when they could and they would continue their search away from the city, then return home. There would be events and actions and there would be satisfaction, but the desired result would remain elusive.

This started stronger than most of what I write and I think I sunk it pretty quickly.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1020: First There was Nothing

First there was nothing. Then after the nothing there was something.

Often this may have been considered an odd thing but there was no conscious thought as of yet and so there were other things to worry about.

After this something came the conscious thought and some may argue that this was not the best decision, but it was not a decision. It was just a thing. It was a happening in a series of things that happened and as it all went on there were more things that happened.

Slowly, yet surely plenty of things were happening and in this series of happenings new things were happening and so it was where more things were happening. Soon there were multiple things that were happening at once and some of them kept on going. Some refused to stop and of course this meant that then the things that were thought impossible to happen began to happen.

It was the birth of something. It was the creation of something. It was something alright.

However, it was to be and that was the worst part, though maybe it was also the best part. Sometimes it was hard to tell as it depended on all the angles and so on and so forth. However, that’s neither here nor there and I’m getting ahead of myself.

So anyway, there were things that existed after they did not exist. Slowly, yet surely (though perhaps quickly depending on how you view the whole period of time in relation to other periods of time) the things were becoming better defined. Things were becoming clear and there were realisations that were being had. Maybe not the realisations that some would expect to happen, but they were indeed happening and that was the main thing, really.

Over time objects formed and shapes became familiar and it was as it was and not as it currently is. Eventually vision came into view and vast landscapes and all those other things that people like became apparent. There were animals. There were sounds. There were the elements of geology and minerals and water and some other stuff too. There were a lot of things. Some would say that there may have been too many things, but these were things that existed and in their existence they cried out for something far greater than they could ever be, but that cry would never be heard and the great yawning of the earth would continue unabated.

And so it was that there were things and these things came together in a way that implied some sort of togetherness, for they were. That’s just the way that it was and there was little, if anything that could be done about it, so there you go. There you have it. There’s nothing left to say.

Well, there probably are other things to say, but they can be saved for a later time for right now it is time to rest, but who knows for how long?

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:54:26

Bit of a struggle, this one. Still, it came out quickly.

I’m about to churn out three more, so we’ll see as to what state I’m in once this is over.

One Thousand Word Challenge 148: I Started off Trying to Write Fiction and Successfully Failed at Doing so

And so it was that a series of events befell the surroundings in an order that implied some sort of order in the order of orders that allows for orders to be ordered.

There was no telling at the time, for everyone was in shock, but soon it would dawn upon their existence that nothing would be the same henceforth. Sometimes that was the unfortunate nature of reality that they had to deal with, but dealing with it was not something that was happening on that particular day.

They would eventually realised, but they would never find out why or how. It didn’t really matter that much anyway. What really mattered is that there were a series of events that seemed disturbing in some manner, in that they created shock and a break from a routine that had been carefully plotted out by many over successive generations.

As it was in the morning, people were just going about their usual business. No one in particular felt a need to break away from the norm and there were little signs, if any, that anything away from the norm should’ve been done. However, that was only the beginning of the beginning of the beginning. There still were plenty of layers to go and there were still plenty of events to happen.

Those events, whoever, were to happen in rapid success and be so fast as to catch everyone by surprise.

It was a sunny day and as it was sunny, the shining sun shone down upon the earth below. There was birdsong and there were other things that could be considered a song of sorts. There were plenty of things, as it were.

Some things did not even exist yet but they too were there, for there were many things out there and in those many things there were some things that seemed to be things that were not things and some of the things that were not things were things but only viewed from a certain angle. If not viewed at the correct angle then those things would not appear to be things and those things not appearing to be things due to being viewed from the incorrect angle were going to have a hard time of being anything as anything that was trying to be anything was going to turn out to be nothing and in that turning out to be nothing there was nothing to anything and nothing to it also.

Then again, perhaps there is and this is all being overthought in a ridiculously convoluted way. However, that’s not the point of this bit of writing, of which I will get to eventually, but for now I will find a thing to say and follow that tangent as I don’t want to complete this.

I don’t want to see this bit of writing end as that would mean that then I have to face the fact that the day is over and I have to stop resting so I can rest so I can do the driving tomorrow. That is not something that I want to face. However, I do need to face it as, if I don’t, then I won’t be able to do the driving tomorrow as I’ll be too tired and therefore that will cause some issues and so on and so forth and you get the idea.

Now that I’ve said my piece, I guess it really is time to get back on track. I need to focus. I need to stay in the zone. I need to carry on and then once I’m done carrying on I need to rest and relax and find the way forward so that there no longer are any issues with going forward, or something.

I need to find out what this was all about. I think there was something about some sort of event and that event meant that things changed. Well, change is inevitable and that probably was going to be the moral at the end of this, or the meaning and it was going to be expressed in a way that was not profound whatsoever for I don’t feel like being profound right now. However, maybe I do feel like getting lost, but I wouldn’t want to be lost for too long as that would mean that things would happen and I would not be able to partake in those happenings and I’d rather partake as that would mean then that I get to be a participant of some sort and so on and so forth and you get the idea.

So I think that what I’m really saying is that I have no intention of resuming the story I started here and so therefore this will remain unfinished and in pieces and all of those other things that I can say that somehow make me sound cool but not really as I’m just killing time and wasting it all and in the end that’s a bad thing to do, but sometimes you do the bad to get the good, or something.

But anyway, there was this event that was a series of events and in these events there were things that were happening and these people in this region were never going to see their lives in the same way for everything was going to be revealed in a manner that would be revelatory rather than banal, but of course they would not realise it as of yet. It would take some time due to the sheer shock of what it was that was happening and all of those other things that were not happening as they were not viewed from the right angles and it was a little cloudier than expected, but sometimes you can’t consider the weather unless you really want to put a dampener on your day, though sometimes you should regardless…

So anyway, I’m not finishing this. I want to keep on writing, but I’ve got to go to sleep.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 10:54:15

I’ve written worse stuff.

Spread Bare

Recently I went to North Head to take photos from a lookout point there that faces the city. Unfortunately the lookout point was closed, but I got a photo of this bare tree which was one of many.

I think there may have been a fire there recently. There was some backburning in the area last year so that likely has something to do with the amount of trees that appear bare.

These ones stuck out a bit as there was a fair bit of space around them, allowing more focus.

I like the way the branches spread out here. It almost feels like they’re creating some sort of circle whilst also reaching outward.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

Partial Sky

Buildings: they exist.

How’s that for a start?

Anyway, I took this during a recent trek into the city, though at this point I was working on leaving the city.

The visibility of the sky is not always this obscured in a fair bit of Sydney CBD. However, it still often feels somewhat-oppressive and bleak. Obviously with increasing shadow levels this makes it seem a lot more dramatic than it is, but I didn’t feel I’d be able to get an accurate feel across otherwise.

This is my submission into the one hundred-and-seventy-second Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “A Day of My Week“.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This one is curated by Amy. Tina curates the next one and the theme has been announced, which is “Interesting Architecture”.

I recommend participating in the challenges. They’re enjoyable and allow room for interpretation of the theme without straying too far. If you don’t participate, then I recommend that you at least check out what others of the Lens-Artists community are submitting.

I hope you enjoy.
