One Thousand Word Challenge 171: Struck by an Idea

Time passes on by and slowly things drift away as new things drift closer. However, that is not what this is about. What I am doing is trying to get under a certain amount of time as there is little time left and so I want to blast through this so I can go toward the next thing.

All these bits of writing could be treated like destinations in a sense. There is one that I’ve been hovering around for perhaps far too long, but still it is there and I am here and it seems like I feel safe around this particular point. However, I’m going to try and move on from here and go over there. This is a journey in the way that not doing much is a journey.

Sure, I could argue that this whole thing is a massive collage of stories interconnected in a way that reveals the ultimate shared universe of some sort, but I’m not going to argue that as I am far, far too lazy to try and do that. Instead I’m just going to keep on writing. I’m going to keep on writing and hope that I get this done before my tea goes cold, though considering the speed that I’m writing at at the present moment, I have faith that my tea will not go cold and I have faith that I will get this done i0n a timely manner… I hope.

So anyway, there I was, sitting down and writing this out, when all of a sudden I was struck by something. It was not an object, or at least not a physical one, but rather some sort of inspiration rather than perspiration. It was something that I could take hold of and nurture and grow. Perhaps it could even be called my own.

There was one slight issue, however. It was not actually an idea, but rather the illusion of an idea.

It was nothing new, but to me it seemed new in that p[articular instant. It seemed like it was something that I could grow and develop into something that would be entirely my own, and so I sat there with it and stirred it for a little while, just to see what would come forward and how it could be grown into something far bigger than the sum of its parts.

I sat there and I observed and I kept on observing for a while. I poked and prodded and I stretched and compressed, and I tried to look at the idea from different angles. I then start applying different points of views and I tried to see what they would discern and what they would reveal.

They revealed very little in the way of what it was that I could make use of and grow into something far greater than the sum of its parts.

I knew not what I could do about this, for all my viewing and testing revealed nothing in the end. I could not see anything different and I could not make headway into understanding this idea. As such, I decided that I needed to take a different course of action and as such, it was time to get rid of this idea.

I threw it away, but it returned. I walked away from it, but it stayed with me. I tried ignoring it but it would not leave. It was there and it seemed like I was stuck with it. I had to think about what I could do to get rid of it and shake it off. However, thinking was not revealing a thing. It was not allowing anything else to come to me.

I decided to carry the idea far away, leave it somewhere, and go elsewhere. There was the possibility of leaving it with someone else. I could gift it to someone and they could make use of it, and so I did what I felt I needed to do.

I hopped into the car and I began a long drive. I drove for a long time and that time went from one day to the next. There were stops and there was little sleep, for there needed to be some driving through the night.

Eventually I arrived exactly where I had intended to arrive. I parked the car and, after turning it off and getting out, started walking toward the ocean.

Soon I reached a cliff and I stood there, staring over it. The sound of the waves occasionally crashing as the water heaved and throbbed, and yet most of the sounds were gentle, not violent. Occasionally birds and other creatures could be heard, and a breeze rustled the leaves of the plants. I stared out and thought for a moment.

I thought about what I had and what I was about to do. I thought about what I had learned and what I was yet to learn. I thought about how little had changed and how this idea had not served me in the ways that I had hoped, and so I prepared.

I grabbed the idea. I held it firmly within my hands, and with a conviction I had never felt before, I threw the idea away from me and over the ocean.

I kept my eyes on it and saw it go a fair distance, but I did not see it fall into the ocean.

All of a sudden it began to glow and suddenly grew outward and took the shape of another being. Feathers upon feathers, wings upon wings and entirely something that I recognised as real. I found myself struck with an awe, unable to take my sight away from what I was witnessing. It was then that I realised that what I had was something rather profound.

The idea then came back to me at a steady rate. It was not long before it was close. As soon as it was, it kicked me in the face, then flew off.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 13:14:88

Not great writing. Took a bit of time to get anywhere, but I do like that something came from the initial rambling.

A Poem About Accumulating Work

I only had a few minutes to spare when I wrote this and wanted to see if I could write something really quickly that made sense. This is probably pretty lazy writing, but I had an idea and knocked it out. Not quite happy with the result; as with most of the stuff I’ve written this could develop into something better. However, I think it gets the idea across well enough.

I hope you enjoy.

It started off a small mound
It seemed it would remain that way
It slowly attracted debris
It gradually increased in size

I watched as it became larger
I poked at some of the sides
I did very little to halt the growth
I ended up with a mountain.

Ibes at the Water Feature

Another photo of the Northern Water Feature.
Here’s one that shows a bit more of the area as comparison.

With this photo I think I was trying to frame the ibes in a certain way relative to the pond and fountains. I’m not too sure. What I am sure of is that this shows what feels like a quiet and calm space.

I think the reflection came through well if you like something more suggestive than specific. Monochrome may not have been the best for this photo however, as some of the details on the trees get a bit indistinct.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

One Thousand Word Challenge 170: Bit of a Pause

There’s a bit of a pause in everything at this particular moment.

That’s what it feels like anyway.

There’s a bit of a pause and things are stretching away from where I currently sit, but they are stretching away silently. Things are escaping as I sit here and twiddle my thumbs, hoping for something to change, but never seeing said change to arrive. Still, this is a moment to breather. It is a moment of respite and so in this moment I try to find the time to relax, but there is no telling as to what will happen.

The clouds have not parted, but they seem to be spreading thin and in that spreading more sun comes out. Maybe there are patches where the sun is shining on through and I just can’t see that right now. Probably due to a tree being in the way, but I can still see the effects of the light and so I feel it is safe to assume that the sun is shining through some of the clouds. I feel it is safe to assume that in parts of the cloudy sky there are patches where the sun is shining through.

Maybe that is part of the pause, but there is no telling as I’m just making this all up as I go along. However, it does remain something worth considering, or something, as then it can lead to thinking about other things. It can lead to thinking about how all of this stuff works together and why they work together and so on and so forth.

Maybe I’ll not think about that right now, however, as I need to think about other things. I need to think about what I’m writing and how it is aimless and going nowhere.

Maybe I’m a little too influenced by the drift of clouds.

I need to think about what I am doing in this current moment and how I should be doing other things as there are other, and perhaps more important things that I should be worrying about at the moment. Doing this does not help to achieve those things, but doing this is much more fun and so I stick with fun and hope for the best and all of that stuff.

The sound of cicadas can be heard and there are birds outside. The birds might just be hunting for cicadas; I don’t know, but the other day I saw one catch the other and then fly off. I don’t think the cicada was expecting such a thing to happen, but it happened. It might’ve happened mid-flight, and it’s interesting to have watched it as ultimately, like many things, it was a spectator thing. I bore witness to something and my life went on, but I doubt anyone would’ve said that my life was to not go on after witnessing such a thing.

It seems interesting as I watched it from a distance. I was there, but I was not there. There is some sort of sense of detachment from what I saw, though obviously that could be seen as my whole not being able to be an active participant in the event, but merely a spectator. The only way I could’ve participated is if I were to distract from the process, and I guess that is fair.

Well, I could’ve somehow set up the whole thing, but that’s something to consider at another date.

Anyway, that was something that happened and I saw it, and now I see other things. I see a gentle breeze move branches, flowers and leaves. I see grass and I see road and I see other things out there. I see the things that I want to be able to see outside of my window, but I also would like to see other things that I cannot currently see. Such is life.

Anyway, I think I’ve said all that I can say at the present moment. There probably is more to say that is rattling around in my head, but talking about one thing and in a really messy way is probably where it will end for the day. There are other things that I need to take care of and I need to take care of them sooner rather than later, but that’s not different from the norm and so I don’t know as to what else I can say at this present moment. Sure, I could talk about the possibility of the impact upon my life that seeing a bird catch a cicada could have, but that is something that I don’t feel much like going into as there are other things out there that I want to cover. The sunlight has disappeared, though it would be more accurate to say that it has dulled. Of course it might pick up again a bit later, but right now it is dulled. It is not as bright and so that makes seeing things a little bit easier, but at the same time it also takes away from the grand warmth that that kind of light can created in specific situations.

Not going to get too much into that though as, again, there are other things that I want to cover.

I want to cover the rest of the words that I need to type out so as to be able to get across what I want to get across, but I don’t think I can do it within the time frame that I hope to do, so instead of that I’ll just keep on writing about whatever it is that I am writing about. There are plenty of words left after this anyway. Those words will come at a later time, and so now that I’ve said all of that I’ll think about the gentle breeze and how it helps to create motion, and I think I’ll think about the brief respite that is about to end due to its time now having ended.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 11:39:91

I don’t know what to make of this.
It’s not great writing, but that’s really obvious.

I think I was just kind of “sketching” when I wrote this.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1059: Weight of Your Body

Sometimes you just feel the weight of your body and it weights you down as you try to do things and so therefore you have difficulty in getting things done. Such is the way of things on the odd occasion, but you get on with it; you get on with life.

It is raining outside, but it was always going to be raining outside when it started raining It comes in waves almost – the heaviness that is – and it hits hard when it needs to, and pulls back when it needs to, which is when it falls.

The rain falls and I feel heavy, but soon I will be walking through the rain as I need to walk and stretch my legs and do all of those things that people do in order to stay healthy and active, and then some. I will do all of the things and as I do all of the things I will do it with a scowl and hope that everyone sees the scowl and realises that I am serious with my scowling. I hope they will realise this, then look within themselves and understand the issues that have come up as time circles around on itself. It will be what it will be and there will be a moment where existence becomes an immaterial concept that is beyond our understanding for our need to understand will focus itself elsewhere, and that will be how it all goes and I will be there, present in the experience of this staring, as will that other person. However, they will not be scowling and I will. I will hold the power.

Now, where was I going with all of this?

Anyway, I don’t know as to where I was going with all of this and so I keep on going on about other things, but there will be walking in the rain, but I hope I won’t get too wet as I want to stay dry to some extent. I want to get this done and I want to stay dry. I don’t want to get wet, but this is a choice I am making. I will take the heaviness of my body to the outside world and I will experience it in the present and then I will do something things followed by some other things. From there I will come back home, have a shower, then get on with my day as that is something that I need to do, for today is a day of work and I need to work and so on and so forth.

I think I need to think of something less dull and ridiculous to say, but I can’t think of anything at the moment as I’m currently banging away on my keyboard, racing toward the end and hoping that I get to the end of this in one piece, but I will and then I will go and start walking along the street and among the rain.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:37:44

This was a lot of fun to write. It’s messy and… well, messy, but it was really fun.

The Tragically Hip: Machine

This was written over one listen, but there were a few pauses.
I’m rather tired at the moment and so those pauses felt necessary, but perhaps they weren’t.

The Tragically Hip’s “Machine” is from Man Machine Poem. From what I’ve read, “Man” and “Machine” were going to be one song but the band decided to split it into two separate songs.

I hope you enjoy.

I think I was looking to just describe the song here, but I feel as though I captured a suggestion of mood. Not sure.

A thump and the percussion comes in, playing things seemingly hard, yet gentle at the same time. A wandering bass line follows, as does a matching guitar. A secondary guitar plays out an additional melody for a moment before both guitars disappear and make way for the vocals.

Low and clear the vocals sound, and seemingly relaxed much like the melody. In a brief pause guitar takes time to return, then the vocals go walking forward once more. The song shifts and swings lower and harder, though without being heavy or abrasive. It gains a sense of energy but retains its cool.

The melody switches back to its “quieter”, more drifting state. Additional sounds come in, emphasising the melody and beat as the vocals walk and drift. The song swings back to its harder sound for a moment before expanding outward and almost becoming dreamlike. It seems to build to something and becomes almost this massive thing. However, it retains its soft qualities in there.

The music doesn’t quite unleash, though it does release. It remains soft, though there’s an energy. What could be a solo plays seemingly more with texture and, whilst it holds attention, does not do anything fancy and lets the mood carry forward. It drifts with precision, almost.

The hard swing comes back, the vocals sit firmly in there, then the song returns to its lighter, more relaxed and wandering state. There’s a sense of peace here, though the song has remained seemingly peaceful. It hasn’t become restless, but rather at ease with itself. However, the instrumentation still sounds adventurous. It sounds confident.

Gradually it all pulls back, and as the final sound left curves downward, the song ends.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1058: Something About Environmental Impact

It is night and the sounds of insects ring on out upon a cool breeze. I sit here and I type away and hope that I can get this done in a speed that I feel is acceptable for the time of day in which I am currently writing this.

It is currently evening and the darkness swallows all, but all the light pollution keeps the darkness at bay. It is all the same for the time being, and for the time being it is not.

I don’t know what that last sentence is meant to mean in the context of this writing, but I’m going to leave it in as most of the stuff I write doesn’t make for much interesting reading anyway.

It is dark and in the darkness light is spread out and the light is thick, but it can only push back some of the darkness, for all of the world must sleep at some point and artificial light can only do so much.

It certainly does a good job of making a lot of places in urban areas not seem as dark as they should though, and perhaps that is an issue that needs to be tackled sooner rather than later.

There probably are a lot of issues caused by artificial light that we need to consider that we don’t consider often enough, but that is not something for here right now. Right now this is all about being vaguely and (hopefully) pretentiously poetic in a manner that gets across all the smug self-importance that I can muster. That is what all of this is about. Sure, I could talk about the ramifications of our impact on the planet; I could talk about that, but where would the fun in that be?

This is no place to share concerns. This is not a space where one must consider the impacts that they have on things. No, this is a place where all of that can be forgotten whilst imbibing upon a miasma of mediocrity and all of its dizzying and intoxicating forms, so long as they are found within a very narrow definition of “all” and “forms”. Therefore, there will be no considering of the impacts that we have. There will be no questioning of that which we should question, especially when it comes to ourselves. There will be no reflection and there will be no rumination. That is all for somewhere else.

We need to male sure that we discard all of that and forget everything and instead appreciate the sounds that we can hear and not think about how much longer we will be able to hear them for. It is far better to bury our heads in the sand and pretend that it’s all okay than it is to think about those things. It is far better to not think about light pollution (as well as noise pollution) and instead just keep on trundling along as though there will be no consequence.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:53:36

It is possible to describe today as a long day and perhaps I let that get to me a bit as I was meant to do more, but instead only did this. Such is life.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1057: Where Ideas Congregate

Alright, so where was I?

There is a place where ideas congregate and they have meetings and work things out before they need to go about their merry way to wherever they need to be after the fact. It is a small place, yet it gets crammed full of stuff. It gets crammed full of ideas as the ideas congregate and work out things whilst they are on their way. As such, often it fills quickly when it is empty and it takes a long time to empty due to being crammed far too much.

A lot of the ideas will try to leave in tandem and this creates blockages. Then the ideas start filtering out really slowly as there’s just too much cramming and blockage around the exits and so their time gets taken up by this time spent waiting to get out and keep on going to where they need to (or want to) go.

Originally the exits and entrances were much wider, as were the hallways that followed said exits. The place where ideas congregated had always been small, but at least there was space to get in and out. However, due to budgetary cuts the exits and entrances and hallways had to be rendered smaller, much to the chagrin to many. However, onward they pushed and persevered, and due to a lack of organisation there were many great jams that prevented things from getting where they needed to be.

The upside to this is that it allowed for more time for discussion and trading and working out things so that ideas could more easily get to where they needed to whilst also exchanging and growling and all of those other things. Often what was exchanged was along the lines of “get out of my way”, but of course this led to healthier discussion and growth for all.

Those who were waiting on their ideas to arrive were none the wiser and always left in the dark about what was going on, and perhaps it was better that way as it meant that they didn’t know what they were missing out on. Of course it also meant that society as a whole took longer to get anything done and grow and improve, but that really was a secondary thing that needed not to be worried about at that particular time, for the ideas still needed to get where they needed to go and the being held up was not helping matters.

Of course there were discussions about how to resolve the issue, especially seeing as there was a reduced budget that needed to be worked with, but anything that seemed sensible was dismissed for a multitude of reasons, whilst anything that was fantastic was carefully considered, though not in the required manner to understand that anything fantastic was a bad idea. As such, things didn’t improve and issues kept cropping up, but discussion remained had and ideas kept on slowly filtering toward where they were most required.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:26:72

Kind of slow to write. Very much underdeveloped as far as ideas go.
This could’ve gone somewhere, but then again, so much of what I write could go somewhere.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1056: An Idea

Watching numbers go up and down, and watching the light outside shift around as the day transitions much more firmly into the afternoon. Eventually it will transition into the evening and the light will continue shifting, helping to denote the passage of time and transition into different periods and all of that other stuff that makes me sound smart of profound or poetic.

I sit here and I type away and I see the effects of the breeze outside, but I do not hear it as the windows are shut and in their being shut they are blocking out a lot of sound from outside. Occasionally a car goes past but otherwise it is a peaceful day in a sense. It is a peaceful day in this particular pocket of the planet, or at least it appears to be peaceful, for it likely is a very busy and bustling day in this particular pocket for some of the organisms, but I cannot see them and as such I don’t consider them or something, but they are a part of what I can see, even if I cannot see them, and so on and so forth.

I think that I’m already getting myself wrapped into this in a manner that is not the best, but I keep on going and I keep on persisting.

I had an idea that I was going to use to inspire some writing, but unfortunately that idea left me. It was waiting to be used and in that time it found that it wasn’t being used at a time that it so desired. Rather than be patient and cook for a while, it decided to leave for somewhere else. It went looking for somewhere where it could plant itself and firmly grow outward, sprouting into something magic and majestic and truly become something that would develop in a way that would make sense and as such eventually turn into something far greater than its initial start.

It appeared that it was not to be with me.

Had it waited, then it would’ve become something far greater than what it could ever be… or so I’d like to believe, for there is no real telling as to what would’ve happened had it stuck around here. Likely it would’ve been explored on a surface level and then been dropped, for as much as I would like to further and more deeply explore the ideas that I have, I often fall short as I don’t give myself enough time to really dig into them. I don’t allow enough time. However, I feel that with this one, had it stuck around, then I would’ve really been able to go somewhere with it and go far beyond the surface. That would’ve required time, but it might just have happened. The idea did not want to wait and it left nd that is that, and now I am here lamenting my fate and going on about it at length for some reason.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:54:68

This took a bit to find any feet and then it was slowly shuffling.
Such is the way of the writing found here.

A Poem About the end of a Year

This was written… maybe within two minutes.
I wish I had though of it yesterday. It’s not great by any measure, but it would’ve worked well with yesterday.

I think that, at the very least, I captured a sense of things not changing. It seems like the shift into a new year is often considered a reset on many things, but it seldom does in the ways most publicly desired.

I hope you enjoy.

Once more the eyes close for the last time
And many farewells are said in an instant
For all that is comes to an end
So that it can resume in the following morning
