Five-Hundred Word Challenge 753: Busy or Lazy

There are times when a thing needs to be done, such as now, but you just don’t go ahead and do it until you’ve got some other things out of the way. Perhaps that is a form of procrastination, but sometimes it is also the effects of having an order in which things need to be done and thus doing them in that particular order. I can tell you right now that there are a lot of reviews of which I need to work on and try and get finished before the end of the day, but they aren’t getting done until I get this done because I want to get this out of the way first. Either that or I shall say that I need to get this out of the way first, which isn’t necessarily true, but it is something that I would like to pretend is the case.

Sometimes it isn’t good to be busy and have a lot of things that need to be done. Sometimes it is better to have a clear plate (so to speak, of course) and be able to not have to worry about having things that need to be done that you want to get done. Sometimes that is much better as it involves far less stress and less stress is a good thing more than it is a bad thing. However, unfortunately I do not seem to be able to operate that way most of the time. Kind of a blessing and kind of a curse; depends on how you look at it and I’m looking at it as a thing that I am currently involving myself in.

I do guess I like to be busy as being busy keeps me busy, but I think I also enjoy procrastination and laziness to too much of a degree to be something that is something someone may or may not consider healthy, but of course it is always a process of work to get out of habits that I find myself in that I also consider to be habits that I would much prefer not having as not having them means I get more (rather than less) done. Rather be on the doing of more than less. At the same time want to get everything done sooner rather than later so I can relax a bit more without the worry of having things on my proverbial plate that require time and effort to get out of the way. Want to be able to relax without the looming deadlines and all of that stuff.

So I guess what I am saying is that you should try to be more active and do the things than you should be lazy, though being lazy can have its own merits so long as you don’t have a lot of things to do. Better to do those things than not do those things, and so on and so forth.

Either that or find another option to pursue.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 04:59:38

Actually, I don’t know what I was trying to say. Maybe I was saying that sometimes it is good to be busy, but sometimes it is good to not be busy. Don’t know. I feel as though this bit of writing is more muddled than it should be if it is trying to say something with clarity.

Another Shot of Anderson .Paak

Here’s another shot of Anderson .Paak. Not sure as to why I’ve only shared one here before this one, but that’s not important.

Something I really liked about this gig is how animated Anderson .Paak was. He made good use of the stage and overall his performance felt quite passionate.

This particular shot shows Anderson .Paak behind a drum set which he’d occasionally hop onto and play with as much passion as he would move around the stage and sing.

This isn’t the clearest of photos when it comes to showing how he would perform, but I think that at the very least it feels much like an “artistic” capturing of a performer playing passionately.

This photo was taken for Culture Eater. You can find a review of Anderson Paak’s performance here and the corresponding gallery here. Please go check them out, as well as the other stuff that our contributors are contributing.

This is my submission into the one hundred-and-thirteenth Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “A Labor of Love“.
I’m including this photo for the challenge as, quite often music is a labour of love, even when someone becomes successful.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This one is hosted guest-hosted by Rusha Sams of Oh the Places We See. Next week’s is hosted by Amy.

I recommend checking out how people are interpreting the challenges. I also recommend joining in. It’s a growing, fun community.

I hope you enjoy.

Double Flowering Plum

It appears as though there are a few names for this particular tree. Including the one above, there is also Prunus blireana (or Prunus x blireana), cherry blossom blireana and cherry blossom plum. There are probably more, but I’ve spent a fair bit of time time identifying which plant this is as well as trying to confirm its name and right now I don’t feel up to spending more time on the endeavour.

I feel as though this is quite the lucky shot. The light, colour and detail are all balanced quite nicely. The flowers look quite pretty and the image overall feels relaxed.

I think the space around the flowers helps keep attention on them as the background is mostly featureless.

This photo is available as a print, among other things.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 752: Breakfast or Waking up

So it all starts with a breakfast. The consumption of the sustenance. Once that is done it is time to descend the location of which is the particular place in space and time that you just so happen to be. It’s somewhere on the top of a mountain in the great land of bush somewhere in the wilderness of Australia, because that is a setting of which is being used to tell this particular story.

Actually, now that I think about it, it doesn’t start off with a breakfast. It starts off a bit earlier than that. There is a tent and the protagonist is in the tent. The tent is on the top of this particular mountain. The protagonist is asleep. They are asleep but they are soon to wake up. I need to explain this as people don’t suddenly start at breakfast. Well, they don’t suddenly start asleep either, but that makes more sense. If the protagonist is waking up, then there’s a source origin. They come into the story at the same time as the viewer (or reader, who is also a viewer) and thus there is already some sort of connection between the protagonist and those that are involved in the art of spectating. They’re both in the same position for whatever comes next. They likely are unaware of what will happen, though maybe there is some sort of awareness on the protagonist’s part so that way there’s the idea of something that they’re aware of that they need to take care of.

Starting at breakfast is not how most people come into consciousness during the day and as such it might put things on too much of an unequal footing, though of course that has its own purposes in plots. sometimes it is okay to start a story somewhere not at the beginning. Even if it all starts with a breakfast, we can assume that in the universe of the piece of particular fiction, that the character(s) did at some point wake up and conducted a series of actions and reactions in order to get to the point where they are eating breakfast; especially if it is at the top of a mountain somewhere in the vast Australian wilderness.

Maybe starting this particular story at the commencement of the breakfast meal is perfectly acceptable, all things considered. Do we really need to read that the protagonist woke up? Do we need to follow each step from the waking of the up to the consumption of the sustenance? Is that really important? Perhaps a montage would suffice. Maybe also just the waking up and the the cutting to the eating. It gives the best of both worlds and also it would be easy enough to assume that there were a series of procedures undertaken in order to reach the breakfast bit. Works better if the breakfast is being eaten during first light as that makes it more of a metaphor for the process of waking up.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 08:05:00

I started off hoping to write some sort of fiction but then ended u going into semantics in a really loose and sloppy way.

I’m beginning to think that I really need to start taking note of some of the things that I write under the pressure of word limits and flesh them out at some point down the track. I don’t think I can make anything interesting out of the expanding of these, but I feel that at the very least I could make the ideas a little more worth reading.

I’m happy with the speed on this one as I was thinking a bit more about what I was writing than I usually would and I still got under ten minutes. I think there might be a bit too much repetition in what I wrote, but I also think that I got the idea across, which is a good thing.

Side Duck

Another photo of a duck.

I like this photo because it looks odd. To me the duck looks like it’s longer than how it would normally appear.

I also like the clarity in most of the feathers, as well as the clarity in water droplets on the duck.

I hope you enjoy.

A Poem About Rainfall

I feel like I should have tried to pay a bit more attention to form and structure with this one.

I was going to write about how a lovely old customer said some incredibly kind and well-wishing things to me today, but unfortunately I found that it would require fare more energy to write about than I want to dedicate at this particular hour, so maybe I will write about that another day. Instead of that I wrote this which… as far as imagery goes, I like quite a bit, but otherwise it lacks a certain deftness I feel as though it required.

I hope you enjoy.

Some sort of digital rainfall falls upon the house
As it hits surface a pang of static rings out in a single bleep
A mass of rainfall creates a blaring static
And all the water washes down in a flood of distortion

Noise outside meets noise inside
Though separated by walls they come together
In their combination something far greater is born
A great, overwhelming mass consumes all

However, before truly swallowing the house
The noise pulls back as the rain subsides
A sense of quiet and calm touches the area
And digital puddles lie themselves upon the lawn’s grass

Eventually they shrink into nothingness
And it is as though nothing had happened at all
Though perhaps soon digital rainfall will once approach
And bathe the house in noise and static

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 751: Just Float Away

I think that today has been a long day and I need to find a way to send my anchor that keeps me grounded to some other place so that I can just float away and get away from everything, or something to similar effect. However, doing so might make it harder to open up doors and if that is indeed the case, then I might just be stuck in my bedroom for a little while.

I’d be there trying to open the door, but the transference of energy into action might lead to me floating away from the door and thus I might have to spend some times bouncing off of all of the walls until somehow there is some sort of friction that slows down the thing that is happening. It would not be fun. It would be dull. It would be tiring. Also, it would be something that I’d much prefer not to deal with as I have things that I need to do and floating around does not help with the completion of said things.

Now that I think about it, the whole reasoning behind looking to float away is to get away from doing work, so things can (in this particular instance) fall under the process of working for the sake of giving some sort of idea of coherence to whatever this is turning out to be, or something.

Anyway, so eventually I would find a way beyond the door and then float on out of the house (assuming the front door was open, of course) and then a breeze might pick me up. It would need to be a gentle breeze as I want to relax. It would also need to take me back eventually as I don’t feel much like re-anchoring myself back to the ground. I’m feeling a little like being lazy and so if I am feeling like being lazy I want to be able to engage that laziness and not worry about things for a while. I just want to drift on by and see how everything changes whilst I am moving at a rather relaxed pace. That is the desire, though it most certainly is not the dream if you know what I mean.

However, all things said and done at the end of the day and of course I would need to go back home and so I’d find a way. Maybe I’d grab onto a rock and use it to somehow revere the direction of the breeze which would eventually take me back home. I could use it to weigh myself down, but I don’t think that that would be as fun, adventurous and exciting as somehow conjuring the magic of the natural world and reversing the direction of wind.

Anyway, I’d go back home and then I’d get back to my desk and then I’d get back to whatever it was that I was doing and it would be like no sort of floating adventure happened.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:33:04

This was written just before work became a real task to get through.
I feel it has a strong sense of looking to avoid working for the rest of the day, which is rather obvious so there was no pint in me stating said thing that is obvious.

Could’ve been better written. Quite cohesive, if rather silly, but lacking in quality a little.

Water Onto Rock

A waterfall I’ve shot a couple of times before.

This one has a nice variation in lighting, I think. I also think that it’s nice how the waterfall almost looks still.

I hope you enjoy.

Hum: Inlet Review

I thought this review was going to turn out longer than it did.
Oh well.

I think that this got across a good description of the album more than how well it works as an album. I really feel as though I could’ve gone much deeper. Oh well.

Most of my interview and review work now appears on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

I hope you enjoy.

Hum are one of those bands that makes music. You could say that whilst it’s their outlet, what they produce is our… Inlet… into their world of sound and expression.

Inlet is a massive-sounding record; Somewhat-direct in places, drawn out in others and huge in atmosphere. There’s a strong attention paid to sound and layering, so not only do the songs sound big; they sound thick and weighty. The percussion isn’t always filling every moment, instead going for less in places and thus providing a strong sense of heave and mass. Loud, raging guitar, hard-hitting drums and thick bass locking in with each other, creating a sound feeling much like a rolling ocean. However, despite how loud and big the album gets, there’s a calmness that carries through all the music.

Some of the songs draw closer to a sense of being straightforward. Whilst it’s great that most of Inlet is this massive, weighty thing, tracks such as “In the Den”, “Step into You” and “Folding” help to keep the album from floating away. They keep a good flow going by holding things back a bit more, though if the album was shorter then perhaps they’d feel less necessary. That said, whilst “Step into You” plays it a little too plainly, these songs are most certainly welcome. You experience being awash with sound, have it pull back for a bit into something more direct, then have it all flow around you again.

The vocals carry a sense calmness and clarity to them that builds quite easily on what’s happening with the music. The words delivered feel introspective in places, as well as melancholic. However, the delivery keeps the words sounding quite measured and thoughtful. It’s a combination that sinks in; the lyrics and their delivery fitting the music is moving in places, but they linger without miring you in misery.

Inlet has what feels like two endings. The first, “Folding” keeps things a bit “smaller” and melodic in a way that implies some sort of closure. Eventually all of its noise falls back and it becomes more peaceful. That too plays out and drops away. leaving the song to close with ambience that – in terms of imagery – feels much like sunlight getting through an overcast sky. “Shapeshifter” comes off more like a post-script. It’s a bit spacier and slower than “Folding”, though (sans an ambient section) it follows that song’s pattern. “Shapeshifter” ends a bit more pretty and gentle in sound though; whilst the ambience of “Folding” is a sublime moment, “Shapeshifter” provides an ending that’s a bit softer and just as conclusive.

Whilst it’s possible to describe Inlet as loud, raging instrumentation playing massive, atmospheric and beautiful music, that sells it short. It doesn’t quite capture the spirit of what Hum are doing. In a way the album feels a lot like a journey; an emotional one, but one that (perhaps) looks for some sort of balance and understanding.

Inlet is available here.

Wooden Angles

A shot of a tree that has had part of it break off.
I have a feeling that it likely broke due to heavy wind stress. Have no idea if that’s the case, but I feel as though it is. The tree didn’t look like had suffered burn or lightning damage, but maybe it was lightning. Don’t know; not a tree expert.

Maybe it broke due to weight imbalance combined with a growing weakness at some point in its body.

I really like the way the branch is angled in this shot. It kind of have this sharp looseness, that I find intriguing as, what with part of the tree being not there, it gives the branch a contorted look.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.
